<p>When families reorganize after separation or divorce, children experience that change from the inside. While adults are managing logistics, emotions, and systems, children are often focused on one central question: “Am I safe, and who is taking care of this?”</p><p>One of the most effective ways parents answer that question is by keeping adult problems in adult hands. Privacy and emotional safety are not legal concepts in this context; they are everyday acts of care that communicate to a child, “You don’t have to carry this. I’ve got it.”</p><h3>Privacy as Emotional Protection</h3><p>Children benefit when adult discussions remain adult. Conversations about conflict, finances, court processes, or strategy—no matter how justified—can feel overwhelming to children who lack the context or power to resolve them.</p><p>For example, when parents take difficult calls in private rather than on speakerphone, or keep meetings and discussions out of shared spaces, children are less likely to absorb stress that does not belong to them. Similarly, when adult conversations are treated as private rather than recorded or replayed, the focus stays on resolution rather than on preserving narratives. Even if children don’t understand the details, they feel the difference between containment and ongoing tension.</p><h3>Protecting the Home as a Child’s Space</h3><p>A child’s home works best when it feels predictable and uncluttered by adult disputes—both physically and digitally.</p><p>Keeping phones, tablets, and computers password‑protected reduces the risk that a child will accidentally read emails, messages, or documents that are confusing or distressing without explanation. Leaving legal paperwork on a kitchen counter or desk can invite questions that pull children into adult territory they are not equipped to navigate.</p><p>Small choices send powerful messages. Closing a laptop before dinner, putting documents away before a child gets home, or stepping into another room for a difficult conversation all quietly say, “This is mine to handle. Your job is to be a kid.”</p><h3>Listening to Children Without Giving Them a Job</h3><p>There is an important difference between hearing a child’s experience and assigning a child responsibility for adult meaning‑making.</p><p>Children benefit from being asked age‑appropriate questions about their own lives. Asking, “How is the new schedule feeling for you?” or “Is there anything that would make transitions easier?” allows a child to share without pressure.</p><p>Difficulties arise when children are placed in the role of messenger, advocate, or interpreter. Asking a child to report what the other parent said, encouraging them to take sides, or framing adult disagreements as something the child needs to understand or help resolve can feel validating on the surface, but it places emotional weight where it does not belong. A child who feels responsible for protecting one parent from the other is not being empowered; they are being burdened.</p><p>Children often respond to this pressure by becoming highly attuned to adult emotions, filtering what they say, or trying to keep the peace. These are coping strategies, not signs of maturity.</p><h3>Why Some Parents Overshare—and Why It Backfires</h3><p>Many parents who share too much with their children are motivated by protection, not harm. A common fear is that if children do not understand what went wrong in the parental relationship, they may repeat similar patterns in their own future relationships. Parents may believe that explaining, warning, or “telling the story” will help their child recognize unhealthy dynamics later in life.</p><p>This instinct is understandable. It often comes from hindsight and a wish that someone had offered guidance earlier.</p><p>The difficulty is that children are not yet positioned to receive adult relationship narratives safely. When a child is given explanations about one parent’s behavior, motives, or character, they are not learning general relationship skills; they are being asked—implicitly or explicitly—to process, evaluate, and carry information about their own family. That task can create confusion, divided loyalty, and pressure to align.</p><h3>Teaching Discernment Without Assigning Judgment</h3><p>There is a meaningful distinction between teaching skills and assigning conclusions.</p><p>Teaching skills involves modeling and values that are not anchored to a specific parent or past conflict. For example, saying, “You deserve to be treated with respect,” or “It’s okay to step back from relationships that feel confusing or one‑sided,” gives children tools without requiring them to judge anyone. Using books, stories, or hypothetical situations to discuss boundaries and communication allows children to learn without personalizing the lesson.</p><p>Assigning conclusions, by contrast, involves explaining why the adult relationship failed, drawing parallels between the other parent and future partners, or asking a child to “remember this later.” Even when carefully worded, children often hear this as a responsibility: “You need to understand this now to stay safe later.”</p><p>Language matters here. Terms like “family violence” or “abuse” are sometimes used broadly in everyday conversation to describe harmful or painful dynamics. While those words have important legal meanings, determining responsibility or labeling conduct formally is the role of judges and professionals—not children. Children do not need diagnoses, verdicts, or character assessments to learn about healthy relationships.</p><h3>Keeping Adult Conflict Where It Belongs</h3><p>Everyday moments often test these boundaries. When plans change, it can be tempting to explain why. A parent might say, “I tried, but your other parent wouldn’t agree,” hoping to be honest or fair. From a child’s perspective, this can feel like being handed a problem they cannot solve.</p><p>A more protective response keeps explanations simple and neutral: “The plan changed, and we’ll do something different.” This approach does not deny reality; it simply shares only what the child can use.</p><p>Children also benefit from being free to enjoy time with both parents without managing reactions. Being able to talk about a fun weekend, a trip, or a success in one household without sensing discomfort in the other helps children feel whole rather than divided.</p><h3>Learning, Adjusting, and Repairing</h3><p>Most parents do not intend to place children in the middle. These patterns often emerge under stress and can change once they are noticed.</p><p>Learning to pause before explaining, redirecting conversations away from adult topics, and noticing when a child seems to be carrying emotional weight are skills that develop over time. When missteps happen, repair matters. A simple statement such as, “That wasn’t something you needed to hear—I’ve got it,” can restore a sense of safety.</p><blockquote><p><strong>Children do not need parents to be perfect. <p>When parents enter Parenting Coordination (PC), they often say they want peace. They say they want the conflict to stop for the sake of their children. Yet, when presented with the tools to achieve that peace, like Zoom conferences, educational readings, or structured communication, many resist.</p><p>They choose the "scorched earth" path: the 3:00 AM adversarial email, the blame-shifting, and the refusal to engage in person-to-person dialogue.</p><p>Why is it so hard to let go, even when we know the conflict is destroying our children’s childhoods? The answer lies in the survival centers of the human brain.</p><h3>1. This is why parents choose "scorched earth" tactics. Punishment feels like protection.</p><h3>2. Why We Resist the "Work"<br></h3><p>We see it often: clients refuse to attend Zoom calls or ignore free educational resources. Why? Because healing requires emotional regulation, and emotional regulation is exhausting.</p><p>It is much easier to blame, criticize, and send a ten-paragraph email than it is to sit in the discomfort of your own triggers and choose a different response. However, emotional regulation is not an optional "extra"—it is a vital life skill. If you do not model it, your children cannot learn it.</p><h3>4. Do You Really Want Change? The Neuroscience of High-Conflict Divorce

<p>As a PC, another one of the most heartbreaking patterns I witness is when parenting agreements inadvertently place children in an impossible position. This often manifests as a "loyalty conflict," a subtle yet profoundly damaging dynamic for a child caught between two parents.</p><p>While decades of research from pioneers like Dr. Joan Kelly, and numerous other child development experts, consistently show that children thrive with two involved parents (absent serious abuse), this doesn't mean parents need to be perfect. <strong>What children need is to be shielded from their parents' conflict.</strong> Unfortunately, some common parenting orders are misused to cause the opposite effect on the child.</p><h3>What is a Loyalty Conflict?<br></h3><p>A loyalty conflict occurs when a child feels pressured, directly or indirectly, to choose one parent over the other, to take sides, or to keep secrets to protect or please a parent. It forces a child to compromise their own needs and feelings to maintain peace or perceived approval from a parent. Imagine a child’s heart as a bridge connecting them to both parents. In a loyalty conflict, that bridge is under strain, sometimes even feeling like it's collapsing.</p><h3>The Harm of "Child-Initiated Contact" Orders<br></h3><p>One of the most frequent examples of an order or agreement inadvertently contributing to a loyalty conflict are ones directing that, "The child shall call the other parent."</p><p>While this might sound like it promotes the child's autonomy and relationship with the other parent, in high-conflict situations, it is often devastating for the following reasons:</p><ul><li>The Child becomes the messenger/referee. The child is burdened with managing the adult relationship. If they don't call, they fear disappointing the absent parent. If they do call, they may feel guilty or disloyal to the parent they are currently with.</li><li>Parents might subtly (or overtly) track if the child calls, making comments like, "Did you call Dad today?" or "Mom was hoping you'd call." This weaponizes the child's natural desire to connect and turns it into a test of loyalty.</li><li>Children need to feel unconditionally loved and safe in both homes. When forced to initiate contact, their downtime becomes another source of anxiety. They lose the ability to simply be a child.</li><li>A child's reluctance to call can be misinterpreted and weaponized. No call might be due to a genuine loyalty conflict, not a lack of desire to speak to the other parent. It can be misinterpreted as rejection, further straining relationships.<br></li></ul><p>Other Examples of Loyalty Conflicts in High-Conflict Cases include:</p><ul><li>"Go tell your Mom/Dad...": Using a child to convey messages between parents.</li><li>"What did you do at Mom/Dad's house?": Interrogating a child for information about the other parent's home or activities.</li><li>"We don't talk about X around Mom/Dad": Forcing a child to keep secrets from a parent.<br></li><li>Do you want to go to Dad's, or would you rather stay with me?": Making a child choose between residences, especially for non-scheduled time.</li><li>Derogatory Comments: Making negative remarks about the other parent in the child's presence.</li></ul><h3>Shifting the Onus to Parent-Led Contact<br></h3><p>The responsibility for facilitating a child's relationship with the other parent rests squarely on the parents' shoulders, not the child's. Here's how effective co-parenting agreements guided by a PC address this:</p><ol><li>Parents Make the Call.</li><li>Scheduled Parent-Initiated Calls: "Parent A shall call the child at Parent B's residence every Tuesday and Thursday between 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM." This removes the burden from the child.</li><li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">Parent B's Role: "The parent with the child shall ensure the child is available and encouraged to speak with the other parent during the designated call window. This includes minimizing distractions and ensuring privacy."</span></li><li>Designated Communication Methods (Parent-to-Parent).</li><li>Secure Platforms: Using co-parenting apps like OurFamilyWizard for scheduling, sharing information, and communication logs. This centralizes communication and reduces direct, high-conflict exchanges.</li><li>Explicitly stating that children are not to be used to relay messages between parents.</li><li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">Positive Encouragement, Not Pressure: </span>"The parent with the child shall speak positively about the child's time with the other parent and encourage the child to enjoy their time and activities."</li><li>"Parents shall refrain from questioning the child about the other parent's activities or personal life."</li></ol><h3>Protecting Your Child's Heart</h3><p>As your PC, my role is to help parents navigate these complexities and, crucially, to safeguard their children from the invisible wounds of loyalty conflicts. <h2>Therapy, Parenting Coordination, and the Role of Structure in High‑Conflict Parenting Disputes</h2><p>In high‑conflict separations, parents often experience a persistent sense of scrutiny. Concerns commonly arise about how decisions will be perceived by the other parent, by the court, or by professionals involved with the child, including counsellors. These fears frequently surface in Parenting Coordination disputes about therapy, consent, and communication.</p><p>Parenting Coordination in British Columbia does not resolve these concerns by evaluating parents’ intentions, emotional states, or parenting philosophies. The role is limited to implementing existing court orders or agreements and managing the process through which parenting disputes are addressed.</p><p>Understanding that distinction is essential when therapy becomes an area of conflict.</p><h3>The Legal Framework That Governs Parenting Coordination</h3><p>Within Parenting Coordination, disputes are assessed through the statutory framework set out in the <em>Family Law Act</em>. Section 37 identifies the factors relevant to a child’s best interests, with particular emphasis on the child’s health, safety, emotional well‑being, and need for stability.</p><p>Parenting Coordinators do not determine who is the “better” parent, nor do they supervise or evaluate parenting quality. Similarly, counsellors engaged to work with a child are focused on the child’s developmental needs, not on judging parents or aligning with one side of a dispute.</p><p>When disagreements arise about therapy, the Parenting Coordinator’s task is to assess whether the process surrounding therapy—such as consent, transparency, and communication—aligns with the governing order or agreement and supports the child’s stability.</p><h3>Therapy as a Process Issue, Not a Battleground</h3><p>In Parenting Coordination, concerns about therapy are addressed procedurally rather than psychologically. The central questions are not why a parent made a particular decision, but whether the decision‑making process:</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;" data-mce-style="padding-left: 40px;">• Complies with the applicable order or agreement</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;" data-mce-style="padding-left: 40px;">• Preserves transparency between parents</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;" data-mce-style="padding-left: 40px;">• Avoids placing the child in the middle of adult conflict</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;" data-mce-style="padding-left: 40px;">• Supports stability and predictability for the child</p><p style="">Difficulties arise when therapy becomes entangled with parental dispute. When one parent unilaterally retains or changes a counsellor without required consent, or when therapy becomes a topic of secrecy or suspicion, the issue is no longer therapy itself. It is the effect of the dispute on the child and on the Parenting Coordination process.</p><h3>Illustrative Process Example&nbsp;</h3><p>For example, in some cases a dispute arises because one parent retains a counsellor for the child without consulting the other parent, contrary to the terms of the parenting order. The concern in Parenting Coordination is not whether the counsellor is “good” or whether the parent acted with positive intentions. The concern is that unilateral decision‑making can create instability, fuel mistrust, and place the child in a position where therapy becomes associated with parental conflict.</p><p>In assessing such a dispute, the Parenting Coordinator focuses on restoring a process that complies with the governing order, promotes transparency, and protects the child from divided loyalties. The outcome may involve clarifying consent requirements, setting communication boundaries, or, where authorized, making a limited determination to implement the existing agreement.</p><h3>The Limits of Education and the Need for Structure</h3><p>Parenting Coordination often includes education about how orders and agreements are meant to operate. In many cases, this leads to improved participation over time.</p><p>In some cases, however, the same issues are raised repeatedly despite explanation, and communication continues to deviate from agreed structure. When that occurs, continued education alone may no longer be effective.</p><p>Parenting Coordinators do not enforce court orders or impose penalties. Their responsibility is to manage the process fairly. Where authorized by the appointing instrument, this may include allocating costs associated with disproportionate process use or moving to a more structured, determination‑focused approach that strictly implements existing orders or agreements.</p><h3>Protecting the Child’s Space</h3><p>From a Parenting Coordination perspective, therapy should remain insulated from parental conflict. This means that disputes between parents should not be played out through the counsellor, and children should not be drawn into adult concerns about what occurs in therapy.</p><p>When parents are able to maintain appropriate boundaries, therapy is more likely to serve its intended purpose: supporting the child’s development without becoming another arena of conflict.</p><h3>Conclusion: Structure as a Protective Tool</h3><p>Parenting Coordination is not designed to eliminate all conflict, nor to resolve every disagreement through cooperation. Its purpose is to provide a structured process for implementing parenting arrangements in a way that protects children and treats parents fairly.</p><p>When cooperation is possible, education and communication support may be sufficient.
