Perhaps the most volatile "perfect storm" a child can face is being caught between a high-conflict divorce at home and a bully at school.</p><p>When a child is being targeted by peers, they need their home to be a sanctuary. If that sanctuary is instead a battlefield of parental litigation and tension, the child has nowhere to feel safe.</p><h3>&nbsp;The Weight of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)</h3><p>Studies on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) show a direct correlation between childhood trauma and long-term health outcomes. One parent might minimize the bullying to spite the other, or they may disagree so fundamentally on the solution that no action is taken at all. This isolation is where mental health tragedies begin. We ensure that emails to the principal are consistent, that the "safety plan" is followed in both households, and that the child receives a singular, supportive message from both mom and dad.</p><p><strong>2. Neutral Information Gathering</strong><br>In high-conflict cases, one parent often accuses the other of "exaggerating" the bullying. As your PC, I can speak directly to the child, teachers or school counsellors to get the facts, removing the "he-said, she-said" dynamic and focusing on the reality of the child's experience.</p><p><strong>3. Professional Referrals</strong><br>If the bullying has led to anxiety, depression, or school refusal, I assist parents in accessing child therapists or trauma-informed counsellors. Under Section 40(2) of the <em>Family Law Act</em>, I ensure these essential health decisions are made through proper consultation, rather than being blocked by a stalemate.</p><p><strong>4. Acting as the "Buffer"</strong><br>By serving as an arbitrator, I can make immediate decisions regarding school changes or therapeutic interventions if the parents are paralyzed by disagreement. This ensures the child isn't left in a dangerous environment while the parents argue.</p><p><strong>5. Preventing the Tragedy</strong><br>The goal of Parenting Coordination is to restore the "sanctuary" of the home. <p>In the world of co-parenting, few topics spark as much tension as a child’s mental health and development. It is incredibly common for one parent to observe a child struggling with focus or impulsivity, while the other sees a child who is simply energetic or "just being a kid."</p><p>When parents sit on opposite sides of a potential ADHD diagnosis, the child is often left in the middle without the support they need. However, when views diverge, the process can stall. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Parent A might see a child who is remarkably successful at home and doesn't want to label them or consider medication. </span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Parent B might see a child who is struggling with social cues, failing to finish schoolwork, or suffering from low self-esteem due to undiagnosed challenges.</span></p><h3>The Solution: Turning to Neutral Professionals</h3><p>To move past a "he-said, she-said" stalemate, we look to the neutral professionals who see your child in a structured, peer-based environment: teachers and daycare providers.</p><p>The diagnostic process typically involves:</p><ul><li>Both parents and teachers complete standardized questionnaires (such as the SNAP, Vanderbilt or Conners scales).</li><li>Teachers provide data-driven feedback on how the child compares to their developmental peers.<br></li><li>A family doctor or pediatrician reviews these objective reports to determine if a referral or trial is necessary.</li></ul><h3>Navigating the BC Healthcare Reality</h3><p>In British Columbia, waitlists for developmental pediatricians can unfortunately span one to two years. This delay can be detrimental to a child’s academic and social progress.</p><p>Family Doctors can often initiate ADHD medication trials themselves. If the questionnaires from both parents and teachers show a clear pattern, a GP can oversee a trial to see if the child benefits. This provides immediate data and relief while the family waits for a specialist appointment.</p><h3>How Parenting Coordination Minimizes Conflict</h3><p>A PC acts as a steady hand during this emotional process. While I am not a therapist or a behavioral analyst, I serve several vital roles when my appointment permits:</p><ul><li>Communication Coach: I help parents discuss medical concerns without it devolving into an argument.</li><li>Process Overseer: I ensure that both parents have their voices heard by the medical team and that information is shared transparently.</li><li>As a Fact-Finder, I help gather the neutral reports from schools to ensure decisions are based on evidence, not just opinion.</li><li>As an Arbitrator, if parents cannot agree on a path forward (such as whether to proceed with a psychoeducational assessment), I can make a binding decision as authorized under your order or agreement and the Roster Contract to ensure the child isn't stuck in limbo.<br>&nbsp;<h3>The Goal: A Child Who Thrives</h3></li></ul><p>ADHD is a common condition that requires immense skill and patience in parenting. Whether the solution is environmental changes, behavioral therapy, or medication, the goal is to give your child the tools they need to succeed.</p><p>If you and your co-parent are struggling to agree on your child’s needs, let’s explore the solutions together. When Parents Disagree: Navigating ADHD, Assessments, and the Path Forward

<p>As parents, we’ve all heard it: "I don't want to go!" Sometimes it’s just a mood, but for many families, this resistance is a constant hurdle even for vital activities like school or essential life-saving skills like swimming lessons.</p><p>When your child refuses to participate, it’s natural to feel stuck. You might find yourself wondering: Is this just shyness? Is it a sensory issue? Could my child be on the autism spectrum or have other neurodivergent traits?</p><p>Whatever the root cause, our role as parents remains the same: <strong>to ensure our children build the social and physical skills they need to thrive.</strong></p><h3>Lessons from Life</h3><p>As a mother of four, I’ve been in the trenches. One of my children is a true introvert—someone who has always found new environments and groups incredibly overwhelming.</p><p>I knew swimming wasn't optional; it’s a safety requirement. However, the traditional crowded community center pool was a "no-go" for my child's temperament. Here is how I adapted:</p><ul><li>I changed the environment. We moved lessons to a neighbor’s backyard pool.</li><li>I modified the social dynamic. We hired a private instructor for my child and a few close friends and siblings.</li></ul><p>Yes, it cost more. But the "buy-in" we got from creating a safe, familiar space was worth it. It turned a source of anxiety into a source of mastery.</p><h3>Identifying the "Why"</h3><p>Before we can fix the behavior, we have to understand the cause. It is our responsibility to investigate what is happening under the surface:</p><ul><li>Is the environment too loud, too bright, or too crowded?</li><li>Is there a bully or a personality clash with an instructor?</li><li>Is your child simply slower to "warm up" to new situations?<br></li><li>When you peak in later on, is your child still miserable in the corner or smiling and involved?</li></ul><p>If you are struggling to find this "why" or can't get your child to engage in necessary activities, don't feel you have to do it alone. Behavioral analysts or interventionists are the professionals trained to guide us through these parenting roadblocks. They can provide the specific strategies needed to turn resistance into participation.</p><h3>The Role of Co-Parenting and Parenting Coordination</h3><p>In a co-parenting dynamic, these struggles can sometimes lead to conflict between households. One parent might feel the activity is essential, while the other feels the child shouldn't be "forced."</p><p>Our ultimate goal is to ensure the child is actually benefiting from the activity.</p><p>If you have tried to "change the room" (modifying the environment), discussed it thoroughly with your co-parent, and still find your child is not benefiting or attending, it’s time to reach out. When "I Don't Want To" Becomes a Barrier: Navigating Resistance in Extracurriculars

<p>The graduation dinner. The final prom. These are milestones meant to celebrate the end of childhood, but for parents emerging from high-conflict or abusive divorces, they can feel like a final battlefield.</p><p>Too often, schools and event committees operate under a "co-parenting fantasy." They expect parents to set aside years of unimaginable pain, betrayal, or even violence to sit at a single table for the sake of "unity." But in reality, forcing victims of high-conflict dynamics to sit with their aggressors doesn't create peace—it creates a pressure cooker.</p><h3>The Risk of Forced Proximity</h3><p>When a school has no policy other than shaming parents into sitting together, they unknowingly enable:</p><ul><li>PTSD Triggers. Forcing a survivor to sit inches away from their harm-doer is a recipe for psychological distress.</li><li>Dominance Narratives. The aggressor often insists on the "united front" to maintain an image of normalcy or to continue exerting control.</li><li>Public Humiliation. If the tension snaps, it is the child who bears the shame of a scene on their special night.</li></ul><h3>A New Approach: The Two-Table Solution</h3><p>"Best Interests of the Child" (mandated by section 37 of the <em>Family Law Act</em>) is rooted in stability. Stability is not a fake smile at a dinner table; it is the absence of conflict.</p><p>Parenting Coordination does not apologize for the reality of the family and instead starts managing it within the jurisdiction of the order or agreement. This means building creative solutions such as requesting two separate tables, with the child having a dedicated seat at both. It allows the child to move freely between parents without being the "buffer" or the "witness."</p><h3>The Proposal to the School</h3><p>This sample letter to the school for the request focuses on the "Best Interests" and safety standards, moving the conversation away from drama and toward risk management.</p><p>"Subject: Request for Accommodations: [Student Name] Graduation Events</p><p>Dear [Administrator Name/Committee],</p><p>I am writing regarding the upcoming graduation dinner for [Student Name]. Regarding the seating plan, our family requests a specific arrangement to ensure a safe, stable, and celebratory environment for our child.</p><p>To prioritize our child’s emotional safety and stability, we are requesting two separate tables for our family. We require spots at one table for [Parent A] and guest, and one table for [Parent B] and guest. We request that we each provide a paid, designated seat for [Student Name] at both tables.</p><p>Given the reality of our family dynamics, forced proximity creates unnecessary risk of distress for the student. Providing two separate "home bases" allows [Student Name] to enjoy the milestone without the burden of managing parental tension. We are prepared to pay the full cost for the additional seat to ensure the integrity of the event and the well-being of our child."</p><h3>The Conversation with the Child</h3><p>This script is designed to be validating, transparent, and focused on the child’s "right" to a peaceful night.</p><p>"I am very proud of you for reaching this milestone. I don't want there to be tension or walking on eggshells at your graduation dinner. I have asked the school to set up two separate tables, and you will have a seat at both. The "Graduation Truce" is a Dangerous Myth

<h2>Why Boundaries are a Parent’s Best Friend</h2><p>When parents enter Parenting Coordination, they are often exhausted. You are likely looking for a referee, a tie-breaker, and someone who can finally bring some stability to the chaos.</p><p>As your PC, my job is to help you implement your existing orders and agreements in a way that resolves disputes without the delays and costs of a courtroom. To do that effectively, I have to work within a very specific set of professional guardrails. To a parent in the heat of a dispute, these rules can sometimes feel rigid.</p><p>However, these boundaries are actually my most important tool for helping your family. Here is why my professional standards are designed to protect you.</p><h3>1. The Symmetry of Time: Why I Track Every Minute</h3><p>In many high-conflict dynamics, the roles become asymmetrical. We often see one parent acting as the "Poker" (using subtle manipulation or high-conflict tactics) and the other as the "Poked" (reacting emotionally or becoming triggered).</p><p>As your PC, I recognize these roles. However, I have to manage a very fine line regarding how I spend my time. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">If I spend three hours coaching the "Poked" parent on how to regulate their emotions, but only fifteen minutes with the "Poker," a lawyer or a judge may later view that lopsided time-tracking as evidence of bias. In the eyes of the law, unequal time could be reframed as alignment.</span></p><p>To protect my neutrality (and your decisions), I must maintain "Structural Neutrality". If one parent requires significant skill-building to stop being triggered, and the other needs to recognize how their manipulation harms the children, I cannot be the one to provide that deep-dive coaching.<br></p><h3>2. The Requirement for Outside Counselling</h3><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Because I must remain a neutral arbitrator, I cannot become your therapist (also, I am a lawyer not a therapist). When the family dynamic shifts, I will point out each parent's role in that conflict, but you must be prepared to do the work with outside experts.</span><br></p><p>Pursuant to the authority in <em>Odgers v. Odgers</em>, 2014 BCSC 717 (CanLII), provided clients can afford it and the appointing Order provides jurisdiction, I may mandate specialized counselling. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">The "Poked" parent may need to build "internal armor" so that triggers no longer derail their parenting. The "Poker" parent may need to recognize how their behavior causes long-term, measurable harm to the children.</span></p><h3>3. "Adjective-Free" and "Review-Ready" Decisions</h3><p>When I write a formal Determination, I focus strictly on objective facts: dates, times, and specific actions. I strip out subjective words like "stubborn" as PC work does not blame or criticize.</p><p>My &nbsp;responsibility is to create binding decisions, without errors of law or mixed law and fact within my jurisdiction. If my decision is reviewed by a court, it must stand as a reasonable, evidence-based document within my jurisdiction anchored in Section 37 of the <em>Family Law Act</em> (Best Interests of the Child). This provides your family with a stable legal record that actually resolves the issue rather than fueling the fire.</p><h3>4. The "No-Credit" Rule (Financial Integrity)<br></h3><p>The standard participation agreement required under the BC Parenting Coordination Roster Society (the PC Contract) requires a retainer for continued services. &nbsp;If the account drops below the retainer, the PC has discretion to "drop the pen" until it is topped up.</p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Under the PC Contract, if one parent has paid their retainer and the other has not, the PC has discretion to allow the parent who is not in financial breach to fund a necessary Determination.
