In separated families, these reactions frequently diverge, and disagreement can escalate quickly.What might otherwise be navigated privately can become an ongoing adult conflict, placing the child at the centre of parental tension at precisely the moment when stability matters most.Parenting coordination exists to reduce that conflict and protect the child from harm — not to resolve ideological disagreement, replace court decision‑making, or substitute for medical or therapeutic expertise. The Parenting Coordinator’s role is narrow, neutral, and deliberate: to assist parents in implementing existing legal authority and professional guidance in a way that promotes stability, safety, and the child’s well‑being.This article explains how parenting coordination approaches these situations in British Columbia, the governing legal framework, the limits of the PC’s authority, and — critically — when a matter must return to court rather than being addressed through parenting coordination.<h3>The Legal Framework in British Columbia</h3>Under section 37 of the Family Law Act, all decisions affecting children must be made with the child’s best interests as the sole consideration. In files involving conflict around gender identity, the factors most commonly engaged include:• the child’s health and emotional well‑being• the child’s views, unless inappropriate to consider• the child’s need for stability, given their age and stage of development• the presence of family violence, including psychological harmParenting Coordinators do not weigh these factors as a court would and do not decide what the child’s best interests require in the abstract. Instead, they apply these principles only within the scope of authority already conferred by court orders, agreements, and applicable law, for the purpose of implementing existing parenting arrangements and reducing conflict.<h3>Acceptance, Denial, and the Real Tension in These Cases</h3>These cases often reveal a central tension that parenting coordination cannot — and does not attempt to — resolve: Parenting Coordinators implement authority; they do not change people.Parents may hold profoundly different beliefs about gender identity, about how to interpret a child’s expressed distress, or about how quickly or cautiously change should occur. Parenting coordination does not exist to reconcile those beliefs or to persuade parents to adopt a shared understanding.Acceptance, in the parenting coordination context, does not mean agreement, endorsement, or ideological alignment. It means recognizing what authority currently exists — through court orders, agreements, or clearly established professional direction — and responding in a way that reduces harm to the child and preserves stability across households.Denial, by contrast, most often appears in parenting coordination not as belief, but as process conflict: repeated disputes over implementation, inconsistent practices between homes, and ongoing adult struggle that the child must manage. The PC’s concern is not what a parent believes, but whether that conflict is destabilizing the child’s daily life.<h3>Stability as the Child‑Focused Priority</h3>Research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) consistently demonstrates that chronic conflict, instability, and divided loyalties are significant contributors to long‑term harm. Parenting coordination therefore focuses on protecting children from becoming intermediaries, messengers, or emotional regulators between parents.When parents respond differently to a child’s expressed gender identity, children may begin to monitor themselves — altering language, behaviour, or self‑presentation depending on the household they are in. Over time, this kind of vigilance undermines emotional security and distracts from normal developmental tasks.From a parenting coordination perspective, the concern is not ideological. It is whether adult conflict and inconsistency are engaging the best‑interests factors under section 37, particularly emotional well‑being and the need for stability.<h3>What Parenting Coordinators Do — and Do Not Do</h3>A Parenting Coordinator is not a judge, assessor, or therapist, and does not replace those roles. A PC does not:• decide unresolved parenting rights• determine a child’s legal capacity• override a guardian’s statutory authority• adjudicate human rights claims• or make findings binding on the courtInstead, the PC’s role is to implement existing authority — court orders, agreements, and applicable law — while minimizing the child’s exposure to adult conflict.<h3>Gap‑Filling Authority Where It Is Conferred</h3>Where a court order or agreement expressly authorizes the Parenting Coordinator to make limited determinations to fill in gaps, the PC may do so only to the extent necessary to implement existing parenting arrangements.Gap‑filling authority allows a PC to resolve foreseeable points of friction so that an order or agreement can function in real life. It does not permit the creation of new parenting rights, the reallocation of decision‑making authority, or the resolution of issues intentionally left to judicial determination.Every determination must be explicitly grounded in the wording and scope of the appointment and must remain tethered to implementation, not outcome preference.<h3>Medical, Educational, and Human Rights Contexts</h3>Schools and healthcare providers operate within statutory and professional frameworks that may affect a child’s daily environment, including matters related to gender identity and expression. Parenting coordination does not determine medical capacity, direct treatment, or adjudicate human rights obligations.However, where existing orders, agreements, or professional directives already govern how a child is supported, a Parenting Coordinator may assist parents in understanding their legal obligations and implementing parenting arrangements accordingly, with the aim of reducing conflict and instability for the child.The PC does not decide what the standard should be. The PC assists parents in living within the standard that already applies.<h3>Guidance from the Courts</h3>British Columbia courts have addressed related issues in cases such as A.B. v. C.D., 2020 BCCA 11, which confirms that:• capacity to consent to medical treatment is assessed by healthcare providers• where a child is capable, their consent has legal effect• parental conduct causing serious psychological harm may engage the family violence provisions of the Family Law ActParenting Coordinators do not make capacity determinations and do not overly extend court findings beyond their factual context. Where authority is clear, however, a PC may assist parents in understanding and implementing their obligations in a way that minimizes conflict and protects the child.<h3>When Returning to Court Is Process Management, Not Failure</h3>Parenting coordination is not a substitute for judicial decision‑making. At the same time, returning a matter to court is not a failure of the parenting coordination process.Court intervention is required when:• no existing order or agreement governs the disputed issue• parents fundamentally disagree about who holds authority, not merely how it is exercised• the issue exceeds the gap‑filling authority conferred by the appointment• new rights, restrictions, or judicial findings are required• procedural fairness cannot be preserved within the parenting coordination processIn contrast, the period of transition — before a new order or agreement is finalized — is often when parenting coordination is most valuable, because the existing order continues to govern the child’s life and stability must be preserved while change is underway.Returning a matter to court is therefore not a response to conflict intensity. It is a recognition that authority has run out, and that the proper decision‑maker must resume their role.<h3>Conclusion</h3>Parenting coordination does not resolve every dispute, and it is not designed to. Its value lies in providing a neutral, structured process that helps families function within existing legal authority — including, where authorized, filling necessary gaps — while keeping children out of adult conflict.In cases involving gender identity, the Parenting Coordinator does not decide what parents must believe or how they must feel. Some of the most concerning situations arise when a child is dealing with two simultaneous stressors: ongoing parental conflict and bullying at school.Children who are targeted by peers benefit most from home environments that are predictable and emotionally regulated. Where parental conflict remains intense or unmanaged, a child may experience both home and school as unstable or unsafe, leaving them without a reliable place to recover, regulate, or seek support.<h3>Compounding Stress and Child Vulnerability</h3>Research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) shows that cumulative stressors can have a greater impact on child well‑being than isolated events. High‑conflict separation and peer victimization are each significant stressors on their own. When they occur together, a child’s capacity to cope may be substantially reduced.Chronic exposure to conflict can keep a child’s nervous system in a prolonged state of heightened alert. While many children can manage a single major challenge when supported by a stable caregiving environment, ongoing parental conflict can erode that resilience. In those circumstances, bullying at school may feel overwhelming rather than manageable.In high‑conflict separations, parents may also be consumed by their own disputes. Signs of a child’s distress can be missed, minimized, or disputed. Some children hesitate to raise concerns at school because they perceive their parents as unavailable or already under strain.<h3>How Parental Conflict Can Interfere With School Responses</h3>When parents are unable to communicate effectively, coordination with a school can become inconsistent or delayed. Parents may disagree about the seriousness of the bullying, distrust one another’s reports, or allow the issue to become entangled in broader conflict. In some cases, this results in fragmented responses or missed opportunities to support the child.From an implementation perspective, the concern is not determining who is “right,” but whether the parenting system is functioning well enough to respond to the child’s needs in a timely and consistent manner, as required by the existing court order or family law agreement.<h3>The Role of Parenting Coordination in These Situations</h3>Parenting Coordination does not replace school‑based processes, therapeutic services, or court intervention. Its role is limited and specific: to assist parents in implementing their existing parenting arrangements in a way that reduces conflict and supports stability for the child.Where Parenting Coordination has been ordered or agreed, and within the scope of the authority conferred, a Parenting Coordinator may assist parents by:• Structuring communication so that information about school concerns is shared clearly, consistently, and without escalation• Assisting parents to follow consultation and information‑sharing requirements set out in their court order or agreement• Helping parents keep discussions focused on present needs and practical steps, rather than blame or historical grievances• Identifying when disagreement or delay is preventing implementation of existing arrangements and requires structured resolution within the limits of the appointmentWhere expressly authorized by the court order or agreement, a Parenting Coordinator may make narrow, binding determinations to resolve specific implementation impasses. These determinations do not involve investigating allegations, interviewing children, assessing bullying, or directing schools or other third parties, and they do not replace school‑based or clinical assessments.<h3>Supporting the Child Without Expanding the Role</h3>Parenting Coordinators do not assess bullying, determine fault, or manage school responses. Decisions about school safety, mental‑health assessment, or therapeutic intervention remain the responsibility of parents, schools, clinicians, and, where necessary, the court.In some cases, Parenting Coordination can assist parents in recognizing when additional professional support may be required and in following through with existing obligations in a timely way. The objective is not to direct outcomes, but to prevent parental conflict from becoming an additional barrier to the child receiving appropriate care.<h3>Reducing Harm by Restoring Predictability</h3>While Parenting Coordination cannot control what occurs at school, it can help reduce instability within the parenting system. When parental conflict is contained and processes are clear, children are more likely to experience at least one environment where expectations are predictable and adult behaviour is regulated.The aim is not to eliminate all stress from a child’s life, but to ensure that parental conflict does not compound other challenges the child is facing.<h3>Closing Reflection</h3>Children navigating bullying need adults who can respond consistently and calmly, even when those adults are no longer together. In the world of co-parenting, few topics spark as much tension as a child’s mental health and development. It is incredibly common for one parent to observe a child struggling with focus or impulsivity, while the other sees a child who is simply energetic or "just being a kid."When parents sit on opposite sides of a potential ADHD diagnosis, the child is often left in the middle without the support they need. They also gather information from neutral professionals, teachers and daycare providers, to capture views of your child in a structured, peer-based environment, <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">especially when you disagree,.The diagnostic process typically involves:<ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul><li>Both parents and teachers complete standardized questionnaires (such as the SNAP, Vanderbilt or Conners scales).</li><li>Teachers provide data-driven feedback on how the child compares to their developmental peers. </li><li>A family doctor or pediatrician reviews these objective reports to determine if a referral or trial is necessary.</li></ul></li></ul><h3>Navigating the BC Healthcare Reality</h3>In British Columbia, waitlists for developmental pediatricians can unfortunately span one to two years. This delay can be detrimental to a child’s academic and social progress.Family Doctors can often initiate ADHD medication trials themselves. If the questionnaires from both parents and teachers show a clear pattern, a GP can oversee a trial to see if the child benefits. This provides immediate data and relief while the family waits for a specialist appointment.<h3>How Parenting Coordination Minimizes Conflict</h3>Where Parenting Coordination has been ordered or agreed, the PC’s role is limited and implementation‑focused. A PC does not diagnose conditions, recommend treatment, or direct medical professionals. When authorized by the appointing order or agreement, a PC may assist parents by: • facilitating child‑focused communication about medical concerns• helping structure a process for information‑sharing between parents• assisting parents to implement existing consultation obligations under s.40(2) of the Family Law Act.If parents remain at an impasse, a PC may make a narrow, binding determination only where the order or agreement expressly delegates authority to implement a specific existing parental responsibility (for example, whether to proceed with an already‑contemplated assessment), and only to prevent implementation paralysis—not to determine diagnosis or treatment.<h3>The Goal: A Child Who Thrives</h3>ADHD is a common condition that requires immense skill and patience in parenting. Whether the solution is environmental changes, behavioral therapy, or medication, the goal is to give your child the tools they need to succeed.If you and your co-parent are struggling to agree on your child’s needs, let’s explore the solutions together. When Parents Disagree: Navigating ADHD, Assessments, and the Path Forward

As parents, we’ve all heard it: “I don’t want to go!” Sometimes it’s just a passing mood. But for many families, resistance becomes a persistent hurdle — even when the activity is essential, such as school attendance or life‑saving skills like swimming lessons.When your child refuses to participate, it’s natural to feel stuck. You may find yourself asking difficult questions: Is this shyness? A sensory issue? Anxiety? Could my child be neurodivergent, including on the autism spectrum?Whatever the root cause, the parental responsibility remains the same: to ensure children develop the social, emotional, and physical skills they need to thrive, while responding thoughtfully to how they experience the world.<h3>Lessons from Life</h3>As a mother of five, I’ve lived this. One of my children is a true introvert — someone who has always found new environments and unfamiliar groups deeply overwhelming.I knew swimming was not optional. It is a safety requirement, not simply a recreational choice. At the same time, the traditional crowded community pool was clearly incompatible with my child’s temperament.So I adapted — not the goal, but the way we got there.I changed the environment by moving lessons to a neighbour’s backyard pool.I modified the social dynamic by arranging private instruction with a few close friends and siblings present.Yes, it cost more. But the buy‑in we gained by creating a familiar, emotionally safe space was worth it. What had been a source of distress became a source of confidence and mastery. The skill was learned — and the experience mattered.<h3>Identifying the “Why”</h3>Before addressing resistance, we have to understand it. Behaviour is communication, and it is our responsibility as parents to look beneath the surface.Questions worth asking include:• Is the environment too loud, bright, or crowded?• Is there a personality clash or a relational issue with an instructor or peer?• Is your child simply slower to warm up to new situations?• When you observe later, is your child still withdrawn — or engaged and smiling?If you are struggling to identify the “why,” or if resistance persists even for necessary activities, you do not have to navigate this alone. Behavioural analysts, occupational therapists, and interventionists are trained to help parents understand what is driving resistance and to design strategies that turn avoidance into participation without causing harm.<h3>The Role of Co‑Parenting and Parenting Coordination</h3>In a co‑parenting context, these challenges can quickly become conflict between households. One parent may view the activity as essential; the other may believe the child should not be pushed or forced.The central question is not whether the activity occurs, but whether the child is actually benefiting from it.Where parents share parental responsibilities and a Parenting Coordinator has been appointed, the Parenting Coordinator’s role depends entirely on the jurisdiction delegated by the court order or agreement and the applicable participation agreement. As a British Columbia Roster Parenting Coordinator, my involvement is limited to assisting with communication and implementation only where the order or agreement is broad enough to confer that authority.If parents have attempted to adapt the environment, consulted meaningfully with each other, and still cannot resolve whether or how an essential activity should be implemented, parenting coordination can provide a structured process to address the disagreement. This may include helping parents explore alternatives, testing whether modifications could meet the child’s needs, and supporting shared problem‑solving — always within the limits of the jurisdiction granted.Parenting coordination is not about forcing outcomes or overriding parental judgment. Many are looking for a referee, a tie‑breaker, or someone who can finally bring stability to ongoing conflict.Parenting Coordination is designed to help parents implement existing court orders and agreements in a way that resolves day‑to‑day disputes without the delay and expense of repeated court applications. To do that effectively, Parenting Coordinators must work within clearly defined professional and legal boundaries.At times, those boundaries can feel rigid. In practice, they are the PC’s most important tool for ensuring fairness, neutrality, and durability of outcomes.<h3>Recent Court Guidance on the Parenting Coordinator Role</h3>Courts in British Columbia have recently provided clearer guidance on the scope and limits of the Parenting Coordinator role. That guidance emphasizes that Parenting Coordination is a post‑order, implementation‑focused process, that a PC’s authority arises solely from the wording of the appointing order or agreement, including your service contract with the PC, and that PCs do not act as therapists, arbitrators, or enforcement authorities.This article reflects that clarified role and explains why firm boundaries protect both parents and children.1. Structural Neutrality and the Symmetry of TimeIn high‑conflict families, interaction patterns often become asymmetrical.
