Decisions about elite sports participation, advanced academic programming, enrichment opportunities, school absences, or program changes tend to carry heightened emotional, financial, and practical consequences. When parents hold different views about how to manage these demands, ordinary co‑parenting disagreements can quickly escalate into entrenched conflict that is difficult to resolve without external structure. Parenting Coordination exists to address precisely these kinds of situations, not by deciding whose vision is “right,” but by providing a structured process for implementing existing court orders or agreements in a way that reduces conflict and protects children from ongoing exposure to parental disputes.</p><p>High‑stakes parenting decisions often trigger conflict because they combine time pressures, identity concerns, financial strain, and fear about long‑term outcomes. Such determinations do not create new parenting rights, do not rewrite court orders, and do not resolve broader disagreements about parenting philosophy. They are procedural tools used to allow the parenting arrangement to function when cooperative processes are no longer viable.</p><p>In high‑stakes cases involving gifted children, the Parenting Coordination process often succeeds not by resolving the underlying disagreement, but by reducing the scope of the conflict and restoring predictability. Decisions may be structured with defined parameters, advance notice requirements, coordination expectations, and review points so that conflict does not recur continuously. <p>For many families, Spring Break is a welcome pause — skiing at Whistler or Big White or heading south for some sun. For separated parents in British Columbia, however, it often becomes a predictable source of conflict, with disagreements brewing in February and boiling over by March.</p><p>These disputes are rarely about a lack of care for the child. More often, they arise from differing assumptions about how parenting schedules are meant to operate during school breaks, and how much flexibility is required to support a child’s actual experience of the holiday.</p><h3>Spring Break: The Child’s Experience vs. the Calendar</h3><p>A common source of conflict is treating Spring Break as a block of “time” to be divided rather than as a period in the child’s life that may include camps, activities, travel, and peer connections.</p><p>When schedules are applied rigidly, children can end up pulled out of camps or programs midway through because “the hand‑off is Wednesday.” This does more than disrupt logistics. It can isolate the child from peers, interrupt routines, and reinforce the feeling that their world is continually fragmented by adult arrangements.</p><p>From an implementation perspective, parenting schedules are tools meant to support a child’s routine and stability, not to override reasonable, developmentally normal activities unless the order or agreement clearly requires that result.</p><h3>Camps, Activities, and the “Veto” Dynamic</h3><p>Conflict frequently arises when a Spring Break camp or activity spans both parents’ parenting time. For some families, that happens. For others, it does not.</p><p>This article is written for parents living in that harder reality: where one parent is making genuine efforts to comply with a parenting order; where professionals, including Parenting Coordinators, are required to work within the structure that exists; and where the other parent’s behaviour remains inconsistent, destabilizing, or distressing for the child.</p><p>Parenting coordination does not rely on personality labels to understand these dynamics. Even where diagnoses exist, labels rarely improve outcomes. The focus remains on observable behaviour, its impact on the child, and what can realistically be addressed within the authority granted by the existing court order or agreement.</p><p>In many cases, the most important question is not who is right, but rather: <em>what is possible now, without making things worse?</em></p><h3>Parenting Coordination Works From the Existing Order</h3><p>A Parenting Coordinator does not redesign court orders or revisit decisions that no longer fit a family’s circumstances. Ethically and legally, the role begins with the existing parenting order and focuses on implementing it as written.</p><p>For parents who are complying, supporting the child’s relationship with the other parent, and doing much of the emotional regulation and repair work, this can feel profoundly unfair. In some cases, litigation becomes a vehicle for escalation, control, or exhaustion rather than resolution.</p><p>Parents can find themselves caught in a painful paradox: remaining within the existing structure can feel like allowing harm to persist, while returning to court can expose the family to stress, cost, and further conflict, with no guarantee of improvement.</p><p>This tension is not a failure of the parent. It reflects the limits of systems designed to manage, rather than eliminate, complex family conflict.</p><h3>Why Stability Still Matters When One Parent Is Not Stable</h3><p>A common fear in high‑conflict parenting cases is that if one parent behaves in consistently harmful or destabilizing ways, the child is destined for long‑term emotional damage. Research presents a more nuanced picture.</p><p>Much of the work on post‑separation parenting emphasizes the importance of both parents remaining involved in a child’s life, but this assumes a baseline of emotional and physical safety. Where that baseline is not present, attention often shifts from the number of parents involved to the quality of the child’s lived experience.</p><p>Longitudinal research on childhood resilience consistently shows that children do not require perfect circumstances to cope with adversity. What matters most is the presence of at least one stable, emotionally available adult who provides predictability and safety.</p><p>This does not resolve the conflict. It does, however, explain why stability — where it exists — continues to matter, even when other aspects of the system are imperfect. Once raised, the focus of a case can shift away from the child’s lived experience and toward parental blame, often with limited benefit to the child.</p><h3>Parallel Parenting as a Containment Approach</h3><p>In high‑conflict situations, collaborative co‑parenting is often unrealistic. A parallel parenting approach — characterized by clearer boundaries, reduced emotional crossover, and predictability — may be more workable within the existing order.</p><p>Parallel parenting does not require approval of the other parent’s behaviour. It relies instead on consistency in what is modelled and maintained within each household. Over time, children tend to notice patterns of steadiness, even when other aspects of their environment remain inconsistent.</p><h3>When the Order No Longer Fits — and Court Is Not a Clear Answer</h3><p>Some parents are bound by final parenting orders that made sense when they were made but no longer reflect the child’s current needs. Behaviour has not improved. Conflict persists. And yet returning to court feels risky, expensive, or destabilizing.</p><p>In these situations, there is no universally correct path. Some parents focus on reducing engagement, documenting carefully without escalation, and strengthening stability within the environments they can control. Others determine that court review is necessary, despite the risks involved.</p><p>What matters most is that decisions are made thoughtfully, with attention to the child’s experience, rather than driven by pressure to win, prove a point, or force change that may not be achievable.</p><h3>The Long View in High‑Conflict Parenting</h3><p>Parenting coordination often requires restraint for longer than feels fair. It can ask parents to tolerate imbalance, uncertainty, and limits they did not choose.</p><p>Children, however, tend to remember patterns rather than arguments. Where one parent consistently provides emotional safety, predictable structure, and freedom from adult conflict, that parent often becomes the child’s reference point for healthy relationships.</p><p>This approach does not promise perfection. In high‑conflict separations, this change can also be quickly misunderstood or misattributed, accelerating the breakdown of the parent–child relationship.</p><p>This article explores one possible lens for understanding this pattern: adolescent neurodevelopment in the context of sustained parental conflict. It does not seek to determine fault, diagnose family members, or predict outcomes in any individual case.</p><h3>Adolescent Brain Development and Stress</h3><p>Research in neuroscience consistently shows that the adolescent brain is still under construction. During the teenage years, the brain undergoes a process known as pruning, in which unused neural connections are eliminated to improve efficiency. This development progresses from the back of the brain to the front.</p><p>As a result, the brain regions responsible for emotional reactivity and threat detection mature earlier than those responsible for impulse control, perspective‑taking, and complex reasoning. The prefrontal cortex—the area associated with judgment and regulation—continues developing into early adulthood.</p><p>In emotionally charged environments, such as high‑conflict separations, this developmental imbalance can leave teens especially vulnerable to stress and overwhelm.</p><h3>Black‑and‑White Thinking and Emotional Simplification</h3><p>When exposed to chronic conflict, adolescents may experience intense internal pressure to resolve emotional tension. Research describes how, under stress, the developing brain may rely on simplified frameworks to regain a sense of safety.</p><p>One such pattern is splitting: the tendency to perceive situations or relationships in rigid, all‑or‑nothing terms. In family systems under strain, this can sometimes manifest as idealizing one parent while rejecting the other. This response is not a conscious strategy or a moral judgment. It reflects a stress‑based attempt to reduce emotional overload. (Caveat: These dynamics cannot be inferred without clinical assessment and should not be presumed in any individual child.)</p><p>Understanding this dynamic does not negate the reality that parents make mistakes or that conflict has consequences.
