Most Parenting Coordinators eventually discover that information alone does not resolve high-conflict parenting disputes. Parents may attend counselling, participate in parenting courses, read books, listen to podcasts, practise mindfulness, attend yoga, and consume enormous amounts of educational material. Many can accurately explain attachment theory, child development, trauma, emotional regulation, and effective communication. Yet the conflict continues.&nbsp; The reason is that high-conflict disputes are often sustained by something deeper than a lack of knowledge. Many parents become trapped within narratives that were created by genuine experiences of hurt, fear, betrayal, rejection, or perceived injustice. The human brain naturally returns to those narratives because they provide meaning, protection, and emotional certainty. Parenting Coordination therefore requires more than education alone. It requires a structure capable of preventing unresolved narratives from overwhelming the implementation issues that affect children.&nbsp;The following eleven containment strategies are designed to help Parenting Coordinators maintain that structure while continuing to move parenting disputes toward resolution.&nbsp;<h3>1. Recognize That Unlimited Communication Creates Unlimited Reporting</h3>Many Parenting Coordinators initially believe that conflict can be reduced through increasingly detailed explanations. A parent raises a procedural concern, and the Parenting Coordinator responds. The parent disagrees with the response, and the Parenting Coordinator elaborates further. Before long, the file contains extensive correspondence regarding process but little progress regarding the child.&nbsp;One of the most important containment insights is that unlimited communication creates unlimited reporting. Every additional procedural discussion creates another opportunity for disagreement, another fairness concern, another allegation, and another report entry. When a file becomes dominated by procedural correspondence, the issue is often not a lack of explanation. The issue is a lack of containment.&nbsp;Experienced Parenting Coordinators eventually learn that extensive procedural correspondence rarely produces extensive procedural compliance. More often, it creates additional opportunities for disagreement. Structure, deadlines, issue management, and containment generally accomplish far more than repeated explanations of the same process.&nbsp;<h3>2. Separate the Parenting Issue from the Process Complaint</h3>Experienced Parenting Coordinators learn to distinguish between the issue requiring resolution and the complaints that arise around that issue. A dispute concerning extracurricular activities can quickly become a debate about fairness. A disagreement about a parenting schedule can become an argument about bias. A concern regarding a determination can become criticism of the Parenting Coordinator.&nbsp;Containment requires repeatedly identifying the active issue. Concerns about process may be acknowledged and recorded, but they are not permitted to replace the parenting issue itself. If the issue concerns extracurricular activities, then the issue remains extracurricular activities. If the issue concerns a parenting schedule, then the issue remains the parenting schedule. This distinction prevents procedural conflict from consuming the entire file.&nbsp;Parents often attempt to expand a single issue into a discussion about every previous disagreement, every perceived injustice, and every historical grievance. Effective Parenting Coordinators resist that expansion and continually redirect attention toward the issue that actually requires implementation.&nbsp;<h3>3. Answer Process Questions Once</h3>High-conflict files frequently involve recurring procedural questions. A Parenting Coordinator explains the process, receives objections, provides further explanation, and is then asked the same questions again in a slightly different form. The temptation is to continue engaging in the discussion.&nbsp;A more effective approach is to answer process questions once unless genuinely new information arises. Once the process has been explained and the rationale communicated, there is often little benefit in revisiting the issue repeatedly. Fairness does not require endless debate about procedural decisions. Fairness requires that the parties understand the process and have a meaningful opportunity to participate within it.&nbsp;This approach is particularly important where parents repeatedly challenge timelines, submission requirements, word limits, or procedural rulings. A Parenting Coordinator's role is not to continually renegotiate the process. The role is to establish a fair process and move the matter forward.&nbsp;<h3>4. Use Standard Responses to Repetitive Process Concerns</h3>One of the most efficient containment tools is the use of consistent process language. Parenting Coordinators sometimes feel obligated to create a new response every time a parent raises a fairness concern or alleges bias. In reality, repetitive concerns often require repetitive responses.&nbsp;A standard acknowledgement that the concern has been noted, considered, and addressed through the previously communicated process frequently accomplishes more than a lengthy individualized reply. Consistency reinforces neutrality and prevents the Parenting Coordinator from being drawn into an endless cycle of procedural correspondence.&nbsp;The objective is not to dismiss concerns. The objective is to avoid creating an incentive for repetitive process complaints to become a substitute for addressing the parenting issue itself.&nbsp;<h3>5. Manage One Issue at a Time</h3>Many high-conflict parents attempt to resolve every disagreement simultaneously. An extracurricular dispute becomes connected to transportation, communication, parenting time, school decisions, support issues, and historical grievances. The result is predictable. The file expands while progress slows.&nbsp;Containment requires active issue management. The Parenting Coordinator identifies the issue currently requiring resolution and defers collateral matters until that issue is complete. This approach is not restrictive. It is practical. Most implementation disputes become manageable when addressed individually rather than collectively.&nbsp;One of the most common mistakes in high-conflict Parenting Coordination is permitting multiple unresolved issues to proceed simultaneously. Complexity increases, reporting requirements increase, and resolution becomes more difficult. Effective containment requires disciplined issue sequencing.&nbsp;<h3>6. Distinguish Participation from Agreement</h3>A recurring challenge in Parenting Coordination is that some parents equate disagreement with unfairness. If they dislike the outcome, they conclude that the process itself must have been flawed. This misunderstanding can generate endless procedural complaints.&nbsp;Experienced Parenting Coordinators focus instead on procedural participation. Did both parties know the issue? Did both parties receive the relevant information? Did both parties have an opportunity to make submissions? Did both parties have an opportunity to respond? If the answer to those questions is yes, procedural fairness is generally satisfied even if one parent strongly disagrees with the outcome.&nbsp;Participation and agreement are not the same thing. Parenting Coordinators are responsible for creating fair opportunities for participation. They are not responsible for ensuring that every participant agrees with the outcome.&nbsp;<h3>7. Refuse to Become the Subject of the Dispute</h3>Perhaps the most important containment principle is recognizing that the Parenting Coordinator is not the issue. Many high-conflict files gradually evolve into a three-way conflict involving both parents and the Parenting Coordinator. Once this occurs, the Parenting Coordinator risks becoming part of the family system rather than managing it.&nbsp;The most effective response is to redirect attention to the implementation issue requiring resolution. The Parenting Coordinator's role is not to defend personal credibility, win arguments about fairness, or become the focus of the file. The Parenting Coordinator's role is to provide structure, facilitate participation, and move the parenting issue forward.&nbsp;When Parenting Coordinators become preoccupied with defending themselves, they often lose sight of the child-focused purpose of the process. The issue is not whether the Parenting Coordinator is popular. The issue is whether the parenting problem has been addressed fairly and within jurisdiction.&nbsp;<h3>8. Ground Every Significant Decision in Jurisdiction</h3>One of the strongest responses to continual process attacks is not persuasion but jurisdiction. Rather than explaining why a particular decision feels fair, the Parenting Coordinator can identify the source of authority, the limits of that authority, and the specific issue delegated for determination.&nbsp;This approach is particularly important in determination writing. Jurisdiction provides an objective framework that is less vulnerable to emotional disagreement. Parents may disagree with a decision, but it is far more difficult to argue that a Parenting Coordinator acted arbitrarily when the determination clearly demonstrates the authority upon which it rests.&nbsp;For this reason, effective determinations often begin with jurisdiction. Before addressing the merits of a dispute, the Parenting Coordinator should demonstrate why the issue falls within the authority delegated by the court order, parenting coordination agreement, or family law agreement.&nbsp;<h3>9. Treat Excessive Reporting as a Sign of Insufficient Containment</h3>Many Parenting Coordinators assume that extensive reporting is simply an unavoidable feature of high-conflict work. Experience suggests otherwise. Excessive reporting often signals insufficient containment at an earlier stage of the file.&nbsp;When a Parenting Coordinator spends pages responding to process complaints, documenting repetitive concerns, and managing procedural disputes, it is worth asking whether the issue should have been narrowed sooner, whether submissions should have been shorter, or whether the process should have been more structured. The goal is not to suppress legitimate concerns. The goal is to prevent procedural conflict from overwhelming substantive decision-making.&nbsp;Excessive reporting is frequently a symptom rather than a problem. The underlying problem is often that the process has permitted too many opportunities for procedural conflict to replace substantive resolution.&nbsp;<h3>10. Focus Relentlessly on Moving the Issue Forward</h3>The ultimate purpose of Parenting Coordination is not to eliminate disagreement. Disagreement is inevitable. The purpose is to prevent disagreement from immobilizing the family. Every process decision should therefore be evaluated through a simple question: does this move the issue forward?&nbsp;Parenting Coordinators do not serve children by allowing implementation disputes to remain unresolved indefinitely. They serve children by establishing fair processes, ensuring meaningful participation, remaining within delegated jurisdiction, and moving issues toward resolution. When viewed through that lens, many process attacks lose their significance. The Parenting Coordinator does not need to win every procedural argument. The Parenting Coordinator needs to maintain a process that is fair, proportionate, child-focused, and capable of producing a result.&nbsp;Progress is often more important than perfection. Families rarely benefit when implementation issues remain unresolved while procedural arguments continue indefinitely.&nbsp;<h3>11. Understand That Most High-Conflict Parents Are Stuck in a Story</h3>One of the most important lessons I have learned from working with high-conflict families is that information alone rarely changes behaviour.&nbsp;Many Parenting Coordinators assume that conflict persists because parents lack knowledge or insight. If that assumption were correct, the solution would be relatively straightforward. We would provide more education, recommend counselling, encourage parenting courses, explain the law, discuss child development, and direct parents toward resources addressing communication, attachment, trauma, and conflict resolution. These interventions are often valuable and sometimes essential. However, after working with high-conflict families for many years, I have become increasingly convinced that information alone rarely produces meaningful behavioural change.&nbsp;Over the years, I have written dozens of educational articles for parents. Other professionals offer excellent books, courses, therapy, coaching, mindfulness training, and support groups. Many parents in high-conflict cases have already consumed enormous amounts of information. Some can explain attachment theory, parallel parenting, emotional regulation, trauma, and child development better than many professionals.&nbsp;Yet the conflict continues. Knowledge is rarely the problem.&nbsp;Many high-conflict parents are not struggling because they do not understand the concepts. They are struggling because they are stuck inside a story.&nbsp;The story may be that they were betrayed, abandoned, controlled, mistreated, disrespected, or treated unfairly. Sometimes the story is entirely accurate. Sometimes it is only partially accurate. In Parenting Coordination, however, the accuracy of the story is often less important than the role the story has come to play within the parent's identity.&nbsp;The human brain is designed to make sense of painful experiences by creating narratives. Those narratives help us understand what happened and protect ourselves from future harm. The problem is that when a person remains injured, fearful, angry, or hypervigilant, the brain may continue replaying the story long after the original event has passed. Every new disagreement becomes evidence that the story is still true. Every communication becomes another chapter. Every parenting dispute becomes another opportunity to revisit the original injury.&nbsp;From a neuroscience perspective, this is not evidence of weakness or bad character. It is often evidence of a nervous system attempting to protect itself. The brain repeatedly returns to familiar threat pathways because those pathways have become highly developed through repetition. The individual may genuinely believe they are trying to solve a parenting problem when, at a deeper level, they are repeatedly revisiting an unresolved emotional injury.&nbsp;This understanding has important implications for Parenting Coordinators. It suggests that many process attacks are not really about process. Many communication disputes are not really about communication. Many conflicts about extracurricular activities, exchange locations, schedules, and consultation obligations are not actually about those subjects at all. The visible dispute is often carrying the weight of a much larger and older story.&nbsp;The Parenting Coordinator's role is not to determine whether the story is true or false. The role is to ensure that the parenting issue does not become trapped inside the story. By creating structure, defining issues, limiting repetition, sequencing disputes, and moving matters toward resolution, the Parenting Coordinator helps families function even when the underlying narrative remains unresolved.&nbsp;This is one reason containment is so important. Structure limits opportunities for repetitive storytelling. Defined issues, word limits, deadlines, issue sequencing, and focused submissions require parents to address the implementation problem in front of them rather than every injury that preceded it. The process does not invalidate the story. It simply prevents the story from consuming the parenting issue.&nbsp;In that sense, effective Parenting Coordination is not merely a dispute resolution process. It is often a form of behavioural redirection. The Parenting Coordinator repeatedly redirects the parties away from the narrative that keeps them trapped and back toward the practical decisions required to raise their child.&nbsp;The goal is not to determine whose story is correct. The goal is to help families function despite the existence of those stories.&nbsp;<h3>Conclusion</h3>The longer I work with high-conflict families, the more convinced I become that Parenting Coordination is fundamentally a process of helping parents move from narrative to implementation.&nbsp;Most parents who enter Parenting Coordination have reasons for feeling hurt, frustrated, frightened, angry, or misunderstood. Their experiences matter. Their stories matter. The difficulty arises when those stories become so dominant that every parenting issue is interpreted through the lens of a previous injury. At that point, the conflict is no longer being driven by the extracurricular activity, the exchange location, the parenting schedule, or the consultation process. The conflict is being driven by the meaning attached to those issues.&nbsp;Effective Parenting Coordinators understand that arguing with the story rarely changes the story. What changes behaviour is structure. By defining issues, limiting repetition, sequencing disputes, requiring focused submissions, and maintaining jurisdictional discipline, Parenting Coordinators help parents direct their attention toward the decisions that must be made today rather than the injuries that occurred yesterday.&nbsp;This is why containment is not simply a case-management technique. It is a child-focused intervention. Every time a Parenting Coordinator redirects parents from blame to implementation, from narrative to decision-making, and from conflict to problem-solving, the process creates more space for the child to experience stability rather than parental warfare.&nbsp;Ultimately, Parenting Coordinators do not help families by becoming experts in the parents' stories. They help families by creating a process that keeps attention focused on the child's needs, the implementation issue requiring resolution, and the decisions that must be made moving forward.&nbsp;Children cannot live in their parents' past. Modern neuroscience is helping us understand why some parents struggle, why some children become stuck in distress, and how recovery is possible.&nbsp;Parents often arrive in the family justice system wanting to know who is right and who is wrong. They want to know whether a parent is safe, whether parenting time should increase or decrease, and whether a child is being harmed. These are important questions, but neuroscience encourages us to ask another one as well: what is happening inside the brains and nervous systems of the people involved?&nbsp;<h3>When a Parent Cannot See the Problem</h3><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;" data-mce-style="font-family: inherit; font-size: calc(16px * var(--body-fontSize, 1)); font-style: var(--body-fontStyle, normal); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">One of the most difficult realities in family disputes involving trauma or substance use is that the parent who most needs help may not believe there is a problem. To the other parent, this can appear dishonest, manipulative, or uncaring. Often, however, the situation is more complicated.&nbsp; Fear, shame, grief, and anxiety can make it difficult for a person to acknowledge the extent of a problem, particularly when doing so threatens their identity as a parent. Admitting that alcohol, drugs, untreated mental health concerns, or unresolved trauma are affecting one's parenting can feel terrifying. Denial frequently develops as a defence against that fear.&nbsp;This is one reason families become stuck. One parent sees obvious risks and wants immediate action, while the other feels attacked and responds by minimizing or denying concerns. The conflict becomes focused on proving who is right rather than understanding what the child needs.&nbsp;A Parenting Coordinator cannot diagnose addiction or compel treatment. What a Parenting Coordinator can do is help shift the discussion away from labels and toward observable facts, child safety, and practical solutions. Chronic exposure to fear, family violence, neglect, addiction, abuse, or overwhelming stress can alter how the nervous system responds to threat. These adaptations may affect emotional regulation, impulse control, judgment, and the ability to tolerate conflict.&nbsp; This does not mean trauma causes brain damage in the way a stroke or serious head injury causes brain damage. Rather, trauma can influence how the brain develops and functions, particularly during childhood. Many parents involved in high-conflict parenting disputes are carrying unresolved trauma of their own, and ordinary parenting disagreements can trigger responses that are larger than the issue itself.&nbsp;Children develop within relationships. Secure attachment develops when children repeatedly experience caregivers who are responsive, predictable, and emotionally available. Research suggests that addiction involves complex interactions among the brain's reward systems, stress systems, emotional regulation systems, and attachment systems. Trauma does not inevitably lead to addiction, but unresolved trauma and insecure attachment can increase vulnerability to substance misuse for some people.&nbsp; Adults often focus on the substance itself. Children focus on what the substance does to relationships.&nbsp;A parent struggling with addiction may become emotionally unavailable, inconsistent, unreliable, unpredictable, or absent. Promises may not be kept. Routines may disappear. The child's sense of safety may become dependent on circumstances outside their control.&nbsp;Many children living with parental addiction become experts at reading adults. They learn to scan faces, voices, and behaviour for signs of instability. The same capacity that allows trauma to shape the brain also allows healing to shape the brain.&nbsp; A parent who enters treatment, develops healthier coping skills, participates in counselling, builds supportive relationships, and maintains sobriety is not simply changing behaviour. In many respects, they are helping create new patterns that support healthier functioning and better parenting.&nbsp;Children benefit from neuroplasticity as well. Safe relationships, stable environments, effective therapy, healthy routines, and positive experiences can help children recover from adversity and build resilience. Their role is generally limited to helping parents implement existing parenting arrangements, reduce conflict, and resolve disputes within the authority delegated by court order or agreement.&nbsp; Children thrive in environments that are predictable and structured. Parenting Coordination can help create that predictability by improving communication, reducing conflict exposure, supporting treatment recommendations, and keeping the focus on the child's developmental needs. These practical interventions often reduce stress for both parents and children.&nbsp;In cases involving substance use disorder, Parenting Coordinators may work alongside lawyers, counsellors, physicians, treatment providers, child protection professionals, and the courts. The objective is not punishment. <h3>A Note About Parenting Coordination and Children's Activities</h3>Parenting Coordinators do not decide extracurricular disputes based on general rules or personal preferences. Every determination must be grounded in the specific wording of the applicable court order, parenting coordination agreement, or family law agreement and the particular circumstances of the child involved.&nbsp;The Family Law Act (FLA) requires a child-focused analysis based on the best interests of the child. This article discusses common considerations that may arise when parenting schedules, school attendance, extracurricular activities, friendships, and distance between households intersect. It is intended for educational purposes only. Every family is different, and nothing in this article should be understood as legal advice or as a prediction of how any particular dispute should be resolved.&nbsp;<h3>When Parenting Schedules Meet Real Childhood</h3>One of the most difficult questions separated parents face is this:&nbsp;How much of a child's life should revolve around parenting schedules, and how much should parenting schedules adapt to a child's life?&nbsp;The question becomes particularly challenging when parents live a significant distance apart. Many separated families live 30 minutes, an hour, or even several hours apart. Initially, the arrangement may appear manageable. Parenting time is scheduled. Exchanges occur. The children move between households according to a predictable calendar.&nbsp;Then the children grow. A six-year-old who spends weekends colouring at home eventually becomes a ten-year-old who participates in sports, gymnastics, music lessons, birthday parties, school clubs, and friendships that become increasingly important. The challenge is that childhood does not pause every second weekend.&nbsp;<h3>The Childhood Cost of Distance</h3>When parents live far apart, children often face choices that other children whose parents live together rarely encounter.&nbsp; Should they attend a friend's birthday party or travel for parenting time?&nbsp; <ul><li>Should they participate in a tournament or miss the event because of transportation challenges?</li><li>Should they join a sports team that practices on weekends or avoid the activity entirely?</li><li>Should they miss school events because attendance is difficult from the other parent's community?</li></ul>These are not merely scheduling questions. They are questions about what kind of childhood the child will experience.&nbsp;The answer is rarely that parenting time should simply disappear. Children benefit enormously from meaningful relationships with both parents. At the same time, children benefit from much more than parenting time. They benefit from friendships, sports, music, gymnastics, birthday parties, school activities, and feeling connected to their community. The challenge is finding a balance that preserves both parental relationships and childhood experiences.&nbsp;<h3>The Myth of Perfect Equality</h3>Many disputes arise because parents understandably focus on preserving every minute of parenting time. The difficulty is that children do not measure their lives in parenting-time calculations. A child may not remember whether a parenting schedule was divided exactly 50/50. They may remember whether they got to play on the soccer team, participate in gymnastics competitions, attend birthday parties with friends, or perform in a school concert.&nbsp;A parenting schedule can be mathematically equal while still depriving a child of important developmental experiences. The objective should not be maximizing minutes. Nor should it be maximizing extracurricular participation. The objective should be supporting the best interests of the particular child, including the child's relationships, stability, development, education, community connections, and overall well-being.&nbsp;<h3>What Stability Really Means</h3>When parents discuss stability, they often focus on the parenting schedule. Certainly, children benefit from knowing where they will sleep, when exchanges occur, and when they will see each parent. Predictable parenting arrangements are important.&nbsp;However, stability is broader than a calendar. For children, stability also includes attending the same school, seeing the same friends, participating in familiar activities, learning from the same teachers and coaches, attending birthday parties, and feeling connected to their community. Children do not separate their lives into categories called parenting time, school, sports, friendships, and activities. They experience all of those things together as childhood.&nbsp;A child who maintains a perfectly predictable parenting schedule but loses access to friends, activities, and community experiences may not experience that arrangement as particularly stable. The challenge for separated parents is recognizing that stability involves preserving not only parental relationships but also the broader social and developmental experiences that help children thrive.&nbsp;<h3>When Activities Occur During Parenting Time</h3>One of the most common conflicts arises when a child's activity occurs during one parent's parenting time. Consider a child who has attended the same gymnastics club for several years. The child has established friendships, knows the coaches, understands the routines, and looks forward to attending each week. The only class available at the child's level happens to be offered on Saturday morning.&nbsp;A parent may object because the class interferes with their weekend plans. That concern is understandable. Parenting time is valuable, and parents naturally want meaningful time with their children. However, the analysis should not stop there. If the proposed solution is for the child to quit gymnastics or move to a different club solely because the existing program occurs on Saturdays, it is important to consider what the child may lose.&nbsp;The child may lose friendships developed over several years. The child may lose relationships with trusted coaches and instructors. The child may lose continuity in training, established routines, and a sense of belonging within a familiar community.&nbsp;In some circumstances, changing activities may be entirely appropriate. A program may be too demanding, too expensive, too far away, or no longer aligned with the child's interests. In other situations, however, changing programs may create disruption without producing a corresponding benefit for the child.&nbsp;The FLA recognizes stability as an important consideration in assessing a child's best interests. Stability is not limited to preserving a parenting schedule. It may also include preserving important friendships, educational continuity, extracurricular involvement, and community connections that contribute to a child's healthy development.&nbsp;The question is not whether gymnastics is more important than parenting time. The question is whether there are practical implementation solutions that allow the child to maintain meaningful relationships with both parents while also preserving the activities, friendships, and experiences that contribute to a healthy childhood. Often there are.&nbsp;<h3>What Is Gained Through Participation?</h3>Activities provide much more than recreation. Research consistently demonstrates that extracurricular participation can contribute to social development, self-confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership skills, emotional regulation, and community connection.&nbsp;For many children, activities become one of the primary ways they develop an identity outside the family. Gymnastics is not merely gymnastics. Soccer is not merely soccer. Music is not merely music. These activities often become places where children discover talents, develop friendships, build confidence, learn discipline, and experience achievement. When parents evaluate activities solely through the lens of scheduling, they may unintentionally overlook the broader developmental benefits those activities provide.&nbsp;<h3>What Adult Children Often Remember</h3>Family law professionals sometimes become focused on schedules, percentages, exchanges, and parenting-time calculations. Those issues matter, but children often experience their lives very differently.&nbsp;When adults reflect on their childhoods, they rarely describe their upbringing in terms of percentages of parenting time. Instead, they remember friendships, sports teams, gymnastics competitions, birthday parties, school events, teachers, coaches, neighbours, and community experiences that helped shape who they became. They remember whether they felt supported in pursuing their interests. They remember whether they felt connected to both parents. They remember whether they were allowed to participate fully in childhood.&nbsp;That does not mean parenting time is unimportant. Meaningful relationships with both parents are often among the most important protective factors in a child's life. The challenge is ensuring that parenting schedules support childhood rather than unintentionally restricting it.&nbsp;<h3>The Parenting Coordinator's Role</h3>Parenting Coordinators frequently encounter disputes about extracurricular activities, transportation, exchanges, and school attendance. The issue is often framed as a conflict between one parent's schedule and the other parent's preferences. A more useful question may be: How can the children maintain meaningful relationships with both parents while also participating in the normal experiences of childhood?&nbsp;The Parenting Coordinator's role is generally not to choose one at the expense of the other whenever a conflict arises. Rather, the goal is to identify practical implementation solutions that allow children to maintain both whenever reasonably possible.&nbsp;Those solutions may include activity-based exchanges, transportation adjustments, shared attendance at important events where appropriate, flexibility around special occasions, make-up parenting time where appropriate, participation in activities during both parents' parenting time, and modified exchange times that reduce disruption. The objective is not perfection. The objective is helping children have both parents and a childhood.&nbsp;<h3>What About Missing School for Parenting Time?</h3>School deserves special consideration. Unlike many extracurricular activities, education is a foundational component of a child's development. Children benefit from regular attendance, consistent routines, academic continuity, peer relationships, and participation in school life.&nbsp;Occasional absences for significant family events may be entirely reasonable. Nor should it be maximizing education at the expense of meaningful parental relationships. The objective is achieving an appropriate balance between both.&nbsp;<h3>Competing Child-Focused Considerations</h3>Reasonable parents may disagree about extracurricular activities, school attendance, travel, and scheduling because multiple legitimate child-focused considerations may be engaged at the same time.&nbsp;<ul><li>Depending on the circumstances, relevant considerations may include:&nbsp; • maintaining meaningful relationships with both parents;&nbsp; • preserving parenting time;&nbsp; • educational stability and school attendance;&nbsp; • participation in extracurricular activities;&nbsp; • friendships and peer relationships;&nbsp; • community involvement;&nbsp; • the child's wishes, where appropriate;&nbsp; • travel burden and fatigue;&nbsp; • financial costs;&nbsp; • family routines and predictability;&nbsp; • developmental needs; and&nbsp; • the impact of parental conflict on the child.&nbsp;</li></ul>The significance of any particular factor will vary from child to child and family to family. No single factor automatically determines the outcome.&nbsp;<h3>Final Thoughts</h3>There is no universal answer to disputes involving extracurricular activities, school attendance, parenting time, or long-distance parenting arrangements. For some children, participation in a particular activity may be highly beneficial and worth significant parental accommodation. For other children, the travel burden, cost, scheduling demands, or impact on family life may outweigh the benefits.&nbsp;Similarly, some children may benefit from attending special events, tournaments, competitions, birthday parties, or community activities that occur during parenting time. In other situations, preserving parenting time may be the more important consideration. The FLA does not require decision-makers to prioritize activities over parenting time or parenting time over activities. Rather, it requires an individualized assessment of the child's best interests.&nbsp;What this article suggests is simply that stability is broader than a parenting schedule alone. Stability may include school attendance, friendships, extracurricular activities, community involvement, family relationships, routines, and opportunities for healthy childhood development.&nbsp;When disputes arise, the challenge is not determining which parent should win. The challenge is identifying the arrangement that best supports the particular child involved. That approach is consistent with both Parenting Coordination and the FLA. It recognizes that children benefit from meaningful relationships with their parents, but also from meaningful participation in the broader experiences that make up childhood.&nbsp;In the long run, children are unlikely to remember the precise wording of a parenting schedule. They are far more likely to remember whether they were given the opportunity to build friendships, pursue interests, participate in their community, maintain important relationships, and simply be children.
